about

About the song, from Byron:
Where do songs, ideas, inspirations come from? It's a question many have asked. This was one of three songs that happened when the album was essentially already recorded. I knew the album would be ready around June, and I just thought, “I should write a summer song.” Some songs require rewriting, even years of trying to work it out. This song happened in 5 or 10 minutes, everything. And as it was being written on paper, I had chills and even tears coming out. I could hear Alyssa singing it as well. I had wanted to get her on the album ever since I heard her voice, but the right song never surfaced until that moment. I grabbed my guitar and found the chords I was hearing in my head. It's so easy to play this song, that even a beginner could play it, 4 major chords.

I originally recorded the tune with synth bass and drum programming. I was far from Larry's studio, and it was last minute. Larry encouraged me to get some real drums or percussion. That's when I ran into Graham Hopkins who plays drums on Summertime Memory. I was thrilled. Graham has played on nearly 50 albums that I know of, but I knew him from the music movie called Once, with the music of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. I had seen that movie many times, and it has great stories. But my favorite part is when they record an album in one weekend. My favorite scene is the first song in the studio. The guy in the control room is on his cell phone, looking bored and uninterested. Hansard start singing and playing acoustic. But when the drums come in, young Hopkins, the guy in the sound booth perks up and starts mixing. It's a great music film.

I told Graham I was thinking of getting a real bass track to replace the synth and he recommended his friend Robbie Malone, among other things, bass player for David Gray for some 20 years. I gave them both freedoms to play as they felt it. They are both song players, and it shows that they really enjoyed this recording. I suggested the drum outro. Graham is great drummer and I enjoy letting great artists stretch out and give the song a new twist.

Then, it seemed Timbales would be fitting percussion for a summer song and that's when I met Reinaldo. He is a highly accomplished, experienced musician. He suggested letting him add vibraphone as well as percussion, and I love what the vibraphone adds to the song. He is really good!

Finally, working with Alyssa to sing this song together was a pleasure. She brought her unique style to it just as I had hoped, and she had a few great arrangement suggestions that really made the song pop.

Even though Larry didn't play on this song, he always has great tech advice and arrangement ideas. I would like to state for the record that the lawn mower at the end of this song was his idea. LoL

Everything about this song was so easy and happened so fast. I feel like it was a gift. There was a feeling, even when I played my guitar parts and sang my vocal tracks, like someone else was singing and playing. I can remember hearing myself sing some strange accent, asking myself, “what's this?” Then just kept singing. Same on the guitar recording, it just flowed on the first take.

Enjoy Life

lyrics

Now won't you let me be
your sweet sweet summertime memory
Like a favorite song
A melody from long long ago
We could always be
a sweet sweet summertime memory
Bebe you and me
A photograph forever in my heart

The summer passes oh so fast
but we could make it last … forever
The kind of days you dream about
A story that gets better over time
It doesn't matter what we do
It's better when we share … together
And someday I could dream about
when life was so divine and you were mine

So won't you let me be
your sweet sweet summertime memory
Like a favorite song
A melody from long long ago
We could always be
a sweet sweet summertime memory
Bebe you and me
A photograph forever in my heart

So won't you let me be
your sweet sweet summertime
sweet sweet summertime
summertime memory
